Which countries or World Health Organization regions have developed an official plan against meningitis?
Countries are forging ahead with national plans
Having a clear vision and plan is essential in the race to defeat meningitis. That’s why World Health Organization (WHO) Member States have committed to developing regional frameworks for each WHO region, and national action plans that reflect the context of individual countries.

A global plan to defeat meningitis by 2030
In 2020, countries around the world agreed to take action against meningitis. These countries committed to a global plan, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), to dramatically improve meningitis prevention, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare. The plan – WHO Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030 – was officially launched in September 2021.
Goal 1
Eliminate bacterial meningitis epidemics
Goal 2
*The baseline year for these global targets is 2015. The targets were derived by assessing the likely impact of the road map milestones in consultation with experts across the world and will be measured by reductions in incidence and mortality rates. Vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis refers to all acute bacterial meningitis caused by Nm, Spn, Hi and GBS whatever the serotype/group.
Goal 3
Reduce disability and improve quality of life after meningitis due to any cause
