What’s the magnitude of the issue?

Meningitis is a serious, often life-threatening illness that can kill in hours. Every year, there are almost 2.3 million cases of meningitis around the world, leaving one in five people with lifelong disabilities including hearing loss, brain damage, intellectual and developmental disability and epilepsy.

Most deaths meningitis can be prevented but progress is behind other infectious diseases.

WHO Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030

In 2020, countries around the world agreed to take action against meningitis. These countries committed to a global plan, led by the World Health Organization (WHO), to dramatically improve meningitis prevention, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare. The plan – WHO Global Road Map to Defeat Meningitis by 2030 – was officially launched in September 2021 and has three visionary goals.

Meningitis Research Foundation launched the Meningitis Progress Tracker to bring available data on meningitis into one place for the first time. The Meningitis Progress Tracker uses data to tell the story of the burden and impact of meningitis. It provides up-to-date and accessible data to help you advocate for the policies and funding needed to defeat meningitis.

Learn more about the Road Map

Goal 1

Eliminate bacterial meningitis epidemics

Goal 2

Reduce cases of vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis by 50% and deaths by 70%

*The baseline year for these global targets is 2015. The targets were derived by assessing the likely impact of the road map milestones in consultation with experts across the world and will be measured by reductions in incidence and mortality rates. Vaccine-preventable bacterial meningitis refers to all acute bacterial meningitis caused by Nm, Spn, Hi and GBS whatever the serotype/group.

Goal 3

Reduce disability and improve quality of life after meningitis due to any cause

About our data sources

The cases, deaths and impairment data in the Meningitis Progress Tracker are based on estimates from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (IHME GBD 2021). Data is continually updated based on how often it is made available.

While estimates are a useful starting point to understand trends in meningitis they do have limitations and are different to surveillance data – which comes directly from hospitals and laboratories.

Estimates for a country or cause of meningitis may differ from surveillance data. It is important to use surveillance data where it is available.

Contact your national Ministry of Health for more information about the surveillance data in your country.
